Michael
Fortier, Torys LLP
Michael Fortier is a
member of Torys’ Environmental, Health and Safety Group,
which is ranked consistently by a number of
publications as one of Canada’s leading environmental
practices. As part of the group, Michael works with a
broad range of public and private sector clients in
various sectors. He assists with all environmental
aspects of acquisitions, financings and other
transactions. He also provides regulatory advice and
assists with litigation and dispute resolution matters.
Oliver joined The
POLIS Project on Ecological Governance at the University
of Victoria in 2003 to lead the Water Sustainability
Project. He holds a Masters in Economics from Queens
University and a Law Degree from the University of
Victoria. He also has a background in Ecological
Restoration. Oliver has studied international relations
while in Europe and was involved in various
environmental and development projects in Costa Rica and
Ecuador, including a tropical reforestation initiative
and a sea-turtle restoration project. As a senior
research associate, his work at POLIS focuses on sound
resource management and ecological based legal and
institutional reform. Oliver provides strategic water
policy advice to non-government organizations (NGOs) and
all levels of government and has authored several major
reports.
Charles is a
partner at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP and is based in
its Toronto and Montreal offices where he practises
environmental law and advises clients in the commercial,
industrial, mining and waste-management sectors. He has
extensive expertise pertaining to environmental aspects
of corporate, commercial and real estate transactions.
He has advised businesses with regard to contaminated
property, brownfield development, environmental permits,
investigations and enforcement, environmental management
systems, commercial agreements, environmental audits,
regulatory and legislative compliance, and
officer/director/parent company liability.
Charles is Past
Chair of the Canadian Bar Association National
Environment, Energy and Resource Law Section, Past-Chair
of the Canadian Bar Association Quebec Division
Environment Section as well as a member of the Quebec
Bar Standing Committee on Environmental Law. He is
recognized by the Legal Directory LEXPERT 2006 as one of
the leading environmental lawyers in Canada. Charles has
also been selected as a world leader by The Guide to the
World’s Leading Environmental Lawyers, 2005 (Legal Media
Group) and The International Who’s Who of Lawyers, 2006
(Who’s Who Legal) in the area of environmental law.

Mimi is Senior
Legal Counsel with the Regional Municipality of Durham.
Her areas of practice include: environmental,
municipal, planning law. She regularly appears before
specialized administrative boards and the courts. She
has authored numerous articles, presented many papers,
taught environmental law courses and is the Past Chair
of the Environmental Law Section of the Ontario Bar
Association. Mimi has worked extensively in the public
and private sectors.
Sean graduated in
1995 from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of
Environmental Studies (B.E.S.) and from Dalhousie Law
School in 1998 with his LLB and a Certificate of
Specialization in Environmental Law. Sean has a
practice emphasis on commercial litigation,
environmental, regulatory and administrative law as a
Partner of Wickwire Holm in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Sean is Past-Chair
of the CBA Environmental Law Section in Nova Scotia and
now serves as Chair of the National Environmental Energy
& Resources Law Section (2007-2008). He also serves on
the CBA National Finance Committee.
He sits on a number
of non-profit Boards, including as Director and
Past-Treasurer of the Clean Nova Scotia Foundation and
Past-Chair of the Environment Committee of the Canadian
Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) Nova Scotia. He has
lectured in the area of environmental law at various
conferences and co-authors articles for the
Environmental Policy & Law (EPAL) newsletter. Since
2000, he has lectured as a part-time faculty member at
Dalhousie Law School and now teaches Business &
Environmental Law.
Sean was honoured
to receive the inaugural Zoe Odei Young Lawyers’ Award
from the CBA (Nova Scotia) in 2003, and one of three
‘Outstanding Young Canadian’ (Vanier) Awards presented
across Canada in September 2005, for Leadership and
Community Service. Most recently Sean is recipient of
the 2007 Dalhousie University Outstanding Young Alumnus
of the Year Award.
